Nurturing Growth
A Collaborative Learning Environment
St. James Academy features an innovative architectural design that utilizes space more efficiently to create both collaborative and independent learning environments. Spaces can be flexibly arranged in different size configurations to accommodate different groups or “student houses.” Related class subjects, when appropriate, can also be taught in joint sessions. This helps students discover the significance of historical or rational influences on each subject matter.
Class Settings: Collaborative Commons • Lecture Rooms • Project Rooms • Focus Rooms • Independent Learning Stations • Reflective Alcoves • Library/Media Center • Fine Arts• Gymnasium• Weight Room
The advantage of these various independent or integrated learning environments is that they enhance interactions, stimulate creativity, allow for more open discussions, and enable learning at various paces.
Technology at the Core
Each student and staff member receives a laptop computer, providing a constant resource at their fingertips. Realizing the great importance of technology in all facets of learning, St. James Academy demonstrates foresight and leadership in this area.
Purpose of Computer Utilization: Expand/explore learning• Monitor student progress • Provide updates on grades & attendance• Alert students & parents to important meetings, activities & events• Assist students in collaboration• Minimize rote learning• Prepare students for technological advances of the future
While textbooks are available in the classrooms, teaching takes place through a variety of electronic media. Online books and other resources have been invaluable study tools in most classes.
Technology also has the ability to bring students together. This is demonstrated each morning when early arriving students are gathered in small groups with their laptops open, helping each other study, sharing tips and working on group projects. Especially awe-inspiring are the electronic presentations created to enhance prayer services and masses, as well as to demonstrate individual student's community service projects using Power Point.
