Preview a Typical Day at St. James Academy
The building opens early for students who want to
- participate in daily Mass in the school chapel
- lift weights or take part in Pilates classes at the fitness center
- receive additional help from a teacher
- access the school!s wireless network on their laptop
St. James Academy uses a modified block schedule that allows students to see every teacher three times a week with two days arranged for extended learning opportunities. Community Time allows students the opportunity to build a sense of belonging and relationships with fellow students, and with staff and faculty. Students are placed in Households of approximately twenty. Each Household is involves a teacher Mentor, a senior Leader, and students from all four grades. Belonging to small groups encourages interaction, increases comfort, and fosters friendship.
Community time includes
- reading verses from the Bible which relate to discussion questions
- group discussion of a specific topic
- listening to a song that pertains to the discussion
- games or different activities inside or outside
- study hall time
Lunch Time is another opportunity to build relationships and community. Our Dining Hall is designed to resemble a corporate dining room with round tables to encourage conversation. Teachers and staff eat lunch in the same Dining hall as the students. The school rule is “No one eats alone.” Including everyone is really emphasized at St. James Academy.
The Gathering Space next to the Dining Hall is a place for students to congregate, use their laptops, talk, or work on homework before and after school.
Other activities for the students at St. James Academy include
- AWOL: Alone With Our Lord, which means taking time out of the school day to spend
time alone and reflect with Jesus
- science classes in the new wing of lab rooms
