This year at St. James, we are working harder than ever to help our students achieve and maintain the highest degree of academic performance possible. To this end we are continuing to sponsor an 8th Hour Study Hall. In accordance with page 37 of the St. James Academy Handbook, students whose grades fall below minimum standards are assigned to this study hall.

These standards are:
  • Two grades below 75% and/or one grade below 67%
The 8th hour study hall is supervised by a teacher and is intended to give students a quiet time to organize assignments, work on assignments, study for tests, or meet with teachers for additional help. The last one is really the key. We want students to use this time to meet with their teachers to receive help in subjects they may be struggling in. This is not a punishment and should not be considered in a negative light.

There is no letter grade assigned for 8th hour. The following bullets outline the basic information regarding 8th hour.

  • Grade reports will be run on Monday morning or the first school day of the week and students who fail to meet minimum academic guidelines will be notified that day that they have been assigned to 8th hour. However students should be proactive in reviewing their grades and should know when their grades are below standards.
  • 8th hour is considered an extension of the school day, which means students must be in proper uniform and conduct will be in accordance with Saint James policies.
  • Students are assigned to 8th hour for the entire week even if their grades rise above the minimum guidelines during that week. This means they must come to 8th hour every school day while assigned.
  • Coaches and activity sponsors will be notified of students who have been assigned to 8th hour. When 8th hour ends, students may attend the remainder of the practice or event.
  • Students assigned to 8th hour for more than one week may be declared ineligible to participate in extra-curricular events. If students become ineligible, the coach or sponsor may allow the student to attend the activity. However they will not be allowed to participate.
  • There are two opportunities each day to attend 8th Hour. The morning session is from 7:00–7:40 AM and the afternoon session runs from 3:20–4:00PM. All sessions are held in room 2125 and supervised by Mrs. Davis.
  • If a student fails to attend 8th Hour for any reason, they must make up the missed study hall. Continuing failure to attend will result in assignment of Discipline points in accordance with the Discipline policy outlined on page 45 of the handbook.
Please help us to help your students by encouraging them to attend 8th hour when assigned. Having your students do a weekly grade check on Sunday evenings will let you and them know whether or not they will be assigned to 8th Hour. It also gives you both a regular time to discuss their classes. We expect students to be proactive in contacting Mrs. Davis when there are unavoidable conflicts to reschedule their 8th Hour. In this way we are also emphasizing self-advocacy and communication with teachers. Since there are two opportunities per day to attend 8th Hour Study Hall, conflicts should be minimal.

If there are questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Davis or Mr. Muehlberger.
